Key Lime Pie for Two

Frank & Lola Love Pensacola Cafe

Since I have been travelling I have learned to be aware of hotel food. For each (usually expensive) exception there are dozens of lemons. During our stay in Pensacola the awful weather didn't leave too many options for two little hungry wolves other than staying at the hotel. While the Margaritaville Beach Resort was very nice, it's with some skepticism that we approached our table.
Fortunately, we were going to be pleasantly surprised. Tables were clean, waiting staff courteous and the atmosphere relaxed.

Super, totally awesome, spectacular Spinach & Artichoke Dip

We ordered an appetizer, a simple artichoke and spinach dip with tortilla chips. Simple but delicious, the dip was crispy on top and not too oily. Artichokes were present in big chunks inside the cheese and spinach dip. Becky loved it, too. The musical background a man was singing and playing his guitar. His repertoire was made of mostly up-beat pop rock songs (several Green Day hits) that he started to replay after a while. Despite the white hair I was impressed but the young sound of his voice. Back to the food, also my entree was simple but very well made. I ordered the grilled mahi mahi, with mango and pineapple salsa, rice pilaf and vegetables as sides.

Grilled Mahi Mahi
I agree whole-heartedly with Gavin. The food, atmosphere and service were fantastic! My favorite was the spinach artichoke dip because a good dip is heard to find. Usually it is just as Gavin described, too oily, mostly cheese on top, if the artichoke is present at all it is canned. (cough, cough, Applebee’s) But this dip was sublime, fresh veggies, well balanced and to top it off the chips were fresh and tasty, too. *Yum* I also enjoyed my entrĂ©e, Blackened Tuna with teriyaki sauce, rice pilaf and steamed vegetables. The Tuna was flawlessly seared, medium rare. Well, maybe not flawless, it was a little on the spicy side but still good. The rice was savory and the veg steamed to perfection. Limp vegetables that are cooked within an inch of their short, very sad lives are one of my top 5 pet peeves. (I smell a new list coming on.)

Blackened Tuna
I liked the tuna as well, kinda tasted like steak, because of the spices and blackening. We finished our meal with a slice of Key Lime pie. The lime flavor was sharp and not too sweet. All in all we were happy and for a hotel restaurant, Frank & Lola’s exceeded our expectations.
